Though Malta measures only 316 sq. Kilometers and has a population of 410.000 people, there are more than 360 churches, the huge majority of these are in daily use.
Over 96% of the Maltese are Roman Catholics and about 60% of them visit the church daily. From this point of view, Malta can be a noble example for Catholics all over the world how to keep your religious spirit alive.
St. Paul footsteps in Malta
There is no more significant moment in the history of Malta than the shipwreck of AD 60 that landed an apostle Paul on the island. During the approximately three months of stay on Malta, Paul introduced Christianity to all levels of society, converting leaders and laypeople alike and establishing on the island what remains today, a proud and widespread devotion to Christ.
Malta was one of the first places in the West to convert to Christianity and Paul’s influential presence here places the island among the most important religious locations in the world.
Pilgrims, traveling with us in pilgrimages have a great chance to visit St. Paul’s Grotto, where the apostle dwelt during his time in Malta and where he preached. We have also celebrated a mass in the St. Paul’s Church, which was built just above the Grotto.
The Marian Cult in Malta
Wherever one turns in Malta or Gozo, being in a city or exploring the less populated regions, one is never far from a site of religious significance. The islands are beautifully scattered with churches and sanctuaries, monasteries and site of miracles, each of these is worthy of a visitor’s attention. Many of them are dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
One of the most notable examples we visit is St. Dominic Church in Rabat. We also visit the Parish Church of St. Mary in Mosta, Ta Pinu Church in Gozo, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Melieha. Though Malta is a very small Mediterranean country, there were three Manifestations of The Blessed Virgin Mary. Pilgrims visit not only these, but also the other amazing places in and around Malta.
